There was a time when Bharat(India) was called Sone ki chidiya. But as the time passed by India became poor country because India was invaded by many. India got freedom in the year 1947 and eversince we have covered miles and miles. If we want India to be number one in all respects then firstly we have to do away with corruption, bureaucuracy and nepotism. We have lot of potential but the only thing is to tap and guide them at the right age and in the direction. We have to raise ourselves above these caste. religion matter, then I don't think anything can stop India from being a no. one. We have vast resources, we have the best the best of brains. All we need is right approach and right direction and there no stopping for us.

You cannot be No 1 in all respects. Pick a few areas where you already have strength or needs and work on them. Preferably where research is not so costly. In the meantime also work on general education of the adult population in good citizenship. Also keep improving infrastructure - roads, rails, bridges, electricity and water supply, sewerage. These are massively important and often overlooked. The best computer network in the world is useless if the electricity supply is not reliable. Ensure that land and other property held by people is secure, this is even more important.
Given the opportunity people will create the wealth to pay for such improvements as long as their property is not endangered by arbitrary government or corruption.

To get rid of the germs infesting this coutry is the best way:
Illiteracy
Poverty (About 50% population is below poverty line)
Corruption
Litterbugs (See how clean Singapore is)
Unequal resource distribution
Reservations and caste system (The reason why India can't get anywhere, an SC student with 69% is considered to be better than a brahmin with 96% in Class XII board. The SC easily gets into IIT while the brahmin has to struggle for a seat anywhere. By creating opportunities for some, the opportunities of others are lost)
Also, enactment and enforcement of law should be more severe. Criminals get away with serial murders while a poor innocent person is penalised for insignificant offences that are not harmful to anyone.

Here is the result of a study on which country set the best examples, under various criteria. Sweden is the best under all counts. India is no where in the list. We need to go a long way, even to think of being reckoned remotely as one of the best countries.

Not!! Number 1 in what????? Not that I have seen!!! USA will never be #1 in all respects since 2 people rarely agree on any one subject here. Needless to say, the country would rather spend it's time arguing rather than solving and uniting. Good question!!!

In this era of globalization I think it is better to focus on being
# 1 to its Citizens ( like Singapore, Finland, Denmark ... etc... these countries are not world leaders but their citizens enjoy a higher quality life than most of the other countries)
# 1 to the world - is just a pomp and show... USA is the # 1 country... but see what they are doing to maintain it... war / racism / drugs and what not.... It is difficult to maintain this position
But # 1 country to its CITIZENS is a dream worth dreaming and making it a reality

Very gud question.
To bring it # 1 in all respects is a bit difficult job but still we can try. We can keep on mentioning the problems here in INDIA. I like to put it short.
An individual must change him self in all respects. Ask him to pay his tax in time, stop bribery, educate him & his family, etc.., Change ones self before changing the world...

Get number 1 quality performers (existing and potential) in all areas including politics, bureacracy, industry, business, agriculture, scientific and technological research, games and sports, teaching, studentship, to become or retain Indian citizenship and allow them free hand. You cannot expect a combination of four legged competencies to become no 1 in two-legged competency areas.
