For the European version of the console, Sony have decided in their wisdom to remove the "Emoticon" chip from the unit in an effort to save on costs (A bit hypocritical considering the EU version is the most expensive - retails at €650, compared to $600 USD in the states and around $500 in Japan). This chip allows the unit to simulate the PS2 and allow you to play your old games.
As a result, Sony cannot guarantee that all of your PS1 and PS2 games will be compatible although some will work as normal.
For anyone in Europe, I recommend getting yourself on Ebay and buying one in from Japan (as the Japanes version is both NTSC and PAL compatible).
Hope this helps.

People really need to do research before they answer on here. Like one other persons said, backward compatibility is sketchy. I have 15 PS2 games and so far only 3 have worked without problems on the PS3.

You can play all of your Playstation games on the PS3. PS and PS2 can all be played. It's because the PS3 is backwards compatable.

I heard that people were importing PS3s to the UK because the ones coming here dont have a chip that can play PS2 games, whether that means they play but with a lower picture quality I dont know.

yes you can play PS1 and PS2 games because the PS3 console will make them look clearer and sharper than the standard PS1+PS2.

i just got a ps3 yesterday and already i have experienced problems with many of my ps2 games, burnout revange- not working, ratchet and clank- not working etc and when i put in pro evolution to play online it says i can't! so backwards compatibility in UK is very sketchy!

Yes, unless the games are copied. If the games are copid, you'll need to mod-chip your PS3.
