Sounds like a dumb question...by toilet do you mean the whole bathroom? or the whole toilet fixture? or in the toilet bowl. Different places use different phrases.
First off, the no-brainer answer. If there is carpet, I can 100% guarantee you that the odor is either inside the rug, or in the padding underneath.
Start with the bowl. Drain the water from the toilet, and use straight vinegar to clean up the bowl. If there is rust or ring around the usual water level, or other deposits, get those too because the odor causing germs stick better to those. Vinegar removes these as well, but if you have trouble, use a pumice stone such as you would use for calluses on your feet, and gently scrape the limescale off the toilet bowl.
Then get the tank, take off the back cover of the toilet and clean the inside surface. This would help if there was a backwash or sorts flushing icky water back into the tank and also would indicates a problem, because this water is supposed to be clean.
Then get all around the toilet. Men can't aim!! Make sure you get every nook and cranny. Outlines of pipes, under the seat, near the screws where the seat is attached, by the faucet where you shut off the water supply, up underneath where you can't reach...everything in or near the toilet fixture.
Check for gaps in the hole where the toilet was seated, gaps in the flooring by the wall behind the toilet, any slices or nicks in the flooring, or the grout, and holes or stains on the wall where there might be a stinky mess.
After that you may need to tear up the floor and see what's going on underneath. If there are wetness stains in the wood subfloor...there is your answer.
Throughout the bathroom, pay special attention to porous surfaces that would hold smells: wood, many types of tile, especially unglazed (matte finish), grout, fabric, rubber, and some sealants and caulk. About the only thing in a bathroom that doesn't hold in smells over time, is chrome and porcelain and glass/mirrors.
You don't need harsh or weird chemicals to get rid of a bathroom odor. You can get it neutralized with baking soda, OR vinegar OR ammonia. Ammonia might sound weird since the urine smell is just like ammonia. Well, that's true, and long story short is that this is why it works so well. Like removes like...just like if you have an oil stain, you need an oil based stain remover.
Hope this helps!

Try using this one proven household staple in your food cupboard, White Vinegar, just pour in one cup of White Vinegar, scrub the toilet with the brush, let stand for a few hours then flush twice, you can even pour a half cup of vinegar inside the tank and leave for about an hour and half then flush again twice, this should rid the toilet smell, also don't forget to scrub under the rim of the toilets real well as bacteria can form under them and cause odor if not cleaned and removed and disinfected. Good Luck !

Yes Bathrooms can be easily invaded by foul odors from urine and feces. They are also an ideal breeding ground for bacteria, mold, mildew, and fungus that also generate odor. Unfortunately, most ventilation systems only recirculate room air and remove large particulate matter such as dirt, dust, Covering up nasty bathroom odors with perfumed deodorizers often times only result in even more offensive smells.
I personal recommend The Smelleze™ Bathroom Deodorizer Pouch is non-toxic, safe, non-hazardous, natural, non-scented, recyclable, and non-caustic. It is an ideal environmentally friendly solution for eliminating bathroom odors in homes without adding pollutants to the air you breathe. Smelleze™ does not contain chemical additives and is especially beneficial for those suffering from chemical sensitivity.
Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It'll be under your flooring....soaked into the floorboards. When we bought our house from an elderly man we had the same problem....we took up the floor boards around the loo and replaced the suite , we then put flooring down and the problem has gone.

There were so many woodworking plans with this collection and you will not believe this but there are over thousands plans in the one package deal. Go here https://tr.im/zw44i
This is really something to find that many all together. For someone like me who is just really starting to get involved with woodworking this was like letting me loose in a candy store and telling me I could have anything I wanted. That was my dream when I was a kid.

I could suggest you go to the department of health, it could be a dead animal or rat in the drainage pipes.

Did you hear about the curtain rods? I will look it up and post it, or someone who remembers it could probably post it here now. It is very interesting. Probably could explain the smell.
