We're no more pig-headed than we've ever been. There are just more of us than ever before and we're able to communicate our pig-headedness in a much quicker way.

Society, believe it or not, is still in its early stages of development. On the path to becoming a lifeform in its own right, it has to completely crush every semblence of individuality in its component cells... i.e. us.
Until that point, it is a very crude and messy thing.... causing people to rather idiotically assume they can balance personal desires with social desires in all kinds of different ways. Of course the two aren't particularly compatible at all... but most folks don't realise that.

Personally I prefer to be anti-social... to serve myself as an individual, since that is all the worth I will get in this Universe.

I see that TV, film and radio has very little to do with any of it. I believe that we are both programmed and driven to survive; our instincts depend upon this. As society grows and prospers this instinct is driven in ways that were never imagined; for example our forefathers only problems were wild beasts of the forest and marauding Indian tribes, then later on they had the wars they fought in. In addition to coming home from those wars and starting all over again. I believe that all of this is carried in our blood in the name of chromosones and genes, which is inhanced by changes in our enviroment.
