Addiction is addiction. It does not matter if you are an addict on the street or an addict in prison, your body will still have the same level of craving for the drug. It is also easily accessible in prisons so even if you think that a prison sentence will help get you clean, chances are it wont. There is also research that suggests the variety of drugs available in prisons is vast, so chances are if you go in using one type of drug you will probably come out using something else. I also believe that the level of support required for prisoners that are also addicts is pretty poor. Prisons are not designed as rehabilitation centres, which needs to change, as much of the crime carried out today is drug related. Hence, if they did introduce rehabilitation programmes the level of re-offending may lower. There is also a saying that states " if you are not an addict when you go into prison, you will be when you come out ". I think that society is too quick to judge those with addiction. People become addicts for all sorts of reasons and come from a variety of different social, economic and cultural backgrounds. However, they are stereotyped as losers from lower socio-economic backgrounds. Believe me I know plenty of coke heads from rich backgrounds. The only difference is they can afford to fuel their addiction and therefore rarely fall into crime. That is until they have sold all their possessions and borrowed money from their families. At the end of the day addiction is addiction and if somebody went into prison a smoker would the same narrow minded attitude be placed upon them and would there be the same level of expectation that they should just stop smoking. I don't think so.

Prisons are not rehabs. As addicts of course they'll do what they must to medicate themselves. People that do drugs, need them. I'm not saying they need the particular drug off the street. I mean they have a problem that needs to be taken care of by a doctor. They may need Wellbutrin or Paxil etc..Theres' only one doctor that has to take care of all prisoners of several prisons. Sometimes the prisons don't have a doctor at all. Addicts won't get the help in prison.
If they do, there is no follow up by a doctor once they are out of prison.

The problem of drug use in prisons shows the lunacy of the drug laws. If drugs can't be kept out of a tightly controlled environment, any efforts to keep them out of a free society are futile at best and insane at worst.

well in my opinion these two things are both connected way to much to be ever avertible. what i mean while many of the prisoners start doing drugs when they get there, the majority of them get to prisons because of the drugs use. some people just can not bear the life in prison as many of them are crowded with amoral ones, so drugs use is a way for them to a better reality-life in a jail is really hard to take for them.another reason is lack of proper medical supplies in most of the prisons so you must take care of yourself somehow, dont you?as many of drugs are proper and even invented for medical purposes.
the other kind of prisoners is the ones that make the latter one's lives hard to take in prisons.such people usually have no taboos or boundaries connected to their morality level, most of them are murderers or drug dealers(just example) that just continue their casual life back in jail..
so it all depends only on social basics and moralty level of those in prisons, and while society wont take care of making its member's lives better, such problems will only increase..

i think they should be given as much pure heroin as they can shove into their veins.
He who lives by the sword dies by the sword.
It would cure overcrowding in prisons and reoffending.
