I'm heading up to the Taste of Chicago this year while I'm visiting my sister and nephew and I wanted to hear other peoples feedback of what the best things are to do, where to stay, how the food and vendors are, etc... Is it really worth all the hype??? My sister said she had a great time last year, but others say, it was just average... Thoughts or experiences anyone? Thanks!

Wow, surprised there's no reaction here either way.

I haven't been to Taste in a few years, so I wouldn't be able to comment on what it's like now. But I could tell you, from past trips, that it's pretty much a big picnic.

There's a wide variety of cuisine to choose from, representative of the cultures and palates that make Chicago Chicago. The prices can be pretty steep, along with some of the portions. Organizers have pushed participating restaurants to offer smaller "taste" portions, so you don't feel as if you have to buy the whole BBQ turkey leg.

I've been there on July 3rd, day of the concert and fireworks. That place is an utter zoo, and unless you revel in big crowds, I'd suggest not going. However, maybe it's the best time to sample food because most everyone else is waiting for the 1812 Overture. But I wouldn't count on it.

And there's the time when I went to Taste during lunchhour, along with everyone else downtown, and ran into UIC men's basketball coach Jimmy Collins with his family sampling the food. Never know who you'll run into.

In any case, bring a credit card to buy food tickets. The cash line is always long and the CC line is short. Methinks local grocery stores (Jewel, Dominicks) still sells tix in advance at a discount.

Being a Man of Inaction

We just finished another bootcamp for men in Chicago and are about to head to New York City for another one for men this friday saturday, and I have to tell you how one thing strikes me: so often, men think that they have to be perfect in so many ways perfect at their dating skills, finding the perfect woman to marry, and after a tough time of a long relationship or the absence of a dating life on the other end of the spectrum, many rubber band to the opposite of what they think is failure going after only what's perfect.
