Hi, there are several things you can do to stabilize your system and/or get the data out of the box. When it starts booting up hit the F8 function key repeatedly and boot into safe mode. If you get to a desktop try rebooting. You may be golden.

If that doesn't work you can put your XP disk in, boot it up and try to repair the system. But don't format, yet!

You have two choices if that doesn't work. Geekiest would be to download and burn Knoppix, (www.knoppix.com), boot to that and save your data to an external hard drive.

Or buy a new hard drive. Put it in your system as the Master on the primary channel with the other hard drive as slave or master on the secondary channel (if IDE and not SATA make sure your jumpers are set properly), don't hook the power to the old hard drive yet, install XP on the new drive, hook the power to the second drive, transfer the data from the old drive to the new drive. Hopefully one of the earlier steps will work!

Good luck. PS backup in the future!

if u reload XP - u may not necessary loose the data but u may loose some programs.

first of all u need to save your data - try going into safe mode and grab all your importanto data into thumbdrive or portable hd. u may not be able to burn cd under safe.

then u can go ahead and reload XP. If u can go into safe mode - u can do a system restore *(accessories>system tools). a kind of roll back to the last good working system. if u can't - then bo pien, reload XP - if prompted to format hd - choose only format the windows folder and NOT the hard drive. U will not loose any data.

First turn off System Restorer, and then try starting your computer in the Safe Mode. Once in safe Mode, run your anti virus program, and any and all spyware programs. Once this is done restart your computer in the normal mode and turn your System Restorer back on. Make sure all anti virus and spyware program are updated on a regular basis. If this does not work, you may need to reload Windows and when you do be sure to add Service Pack 2, Good Luck

Maybe you should backup your necessary data first, format your hard drive (before you do that you should set your PC's first boot device to cd or dvd-rom/rw then insert your Windows XP home edition cd), install again, then install the sp2. You can correct me if I'm wrong.
