Chav is derived from an old English Term that means poor person. In modern day English is generally used as a derogatory term.
The widely held view in my community is that a Chav is someone who wears a tracksuit around town (often tucking their trousers into their socks) and listens to rap music.
Chavs are obsessed with Sporting Labels such as Nike, Lactose and Adidas
Chavs are often violent.
Other names for Chavs include... Yob, Hoddie and Ned (ned is a police term that stands for Non Educated Delinquent)
This is a picture of some classic Chavs http://www.yusef.co.uk/chav.JPG
One False acronym I know of is
Council House Associated Vermin

Lets clear something up not ALL chavs live in council houses, i live in a council house and i am defiantly not a chav!
Chavs are normally teenage boys/girls who look like clones of each other, girls wear massive gold hooped earrings, and enough bling to put MR T in the shade and wear nasty tracksuits with writing across the bum and have the biggest highest tightly pulled pony tails you have ever seen.
Boy's tend to wear anything with a designer label, usually snide ones from the local market and walk and talk like "de is in da ghetto innit"
In the olden days people like this were actually burnt at the stake, we live in hope!

You've had lots of answers about what a chav is understood to be now, but where did the word come from?
I understood that it is a corruption of the Romany word "chal" meaning a male person or fellow (the feminine is "chai" or "chi"). When a group of romanies were together (perhaps at a local fair) this gave rise to "chavish" as a colloquial description of how they were speaking.
So, going round in a circle, people who spoke "chavish" must be "chavs"...

Chavish the dialect of the chav.
Believing that he is a bad boy gangsta rapper, the chav or chavette will converse with others in a secret language. Scientists have been working for years on trying to decipher chavish but to no avail. Other than swear words that you will manage to pick out, you will not understand any of this tirade; simply assume its not pleasant and probably involves your parents and a dog.

Chav or Charv/Charver is a mainly derogatory slang term in the United Kingdom for a subcultural stereotype fixated on fashions such as gold jewellary and 'designer' clothing.
