Ignorance is the most pervasive affliction of mankind. It has many forms including arrogance, carelessness, hubris, reckless disregard for others, and the lack of a moral or spiritual compass to guide ones thoughts and actions. I believe it to me within each person's capabilities to chart the enlightened course for their lives.

"I just won't have a clue,
If not for you."

Letting yourself be ruled by emotions. It's been my experience that most ignorance--excluding stuff you have no way of knowing--is, at its base, WILLFUL ignorance. People choose to believe what they want rather than what logic & evidence dictate to be real.

For example, take evolution vs. creationism. Although the evidence for evolution is beyond overwhelming, some people are afraid to accept it, because their religious leaders tell them that evolution is an atheistic belief, a liberal belief, or otherwise against their preconceived religious beliefs. They prefer to believe that some loving deity created everything, and did so with some purpose in mind. This belief prevents them from viewing the evidence, and what evidence they do come across is casually ignored.

Another example is capitalism vs. socialism. In both theory and practice, capitalism trumps socialism in bringing the best standard of living to the most people. And yet socialism and other govt. programs still have very broad support, because people are afraid of capitalism and hold distorted, warped views of it due to their socialist dogma that prevents them from analyzing it in a rational manner. Capitalism is an economic system while socialism is a political dogma, and yet socialism's greatest strength is in making people view capitalism as just another political dogma the same way creationists will call evolution "just another belief system."

Did you ever watch that TV show "The X-Files"? In his office on the wall, agent Mulder has a poster (a picture of a flying saucer) with the caption, "I Want to Believe." I think that is one of the most dangerous and harmful ideas out there--that a person should prefer personal belief over actual, verifiable knowledge.

For more insight on ignorance, I highly recommend "The Demon-Haunted World" by Carl Sagan, and "Why People Believe Weird Things" by Michael Shermer.

Ignorance should not be confused with lack of intelligence. It's possible to be naturally smart, but yet be ignorant of such things as history, science, philosophy, etc.

I suppose one could say its a lack of awareness. Some say "lack of education" but I personally have known some people who didn't have much formal education, but they were "self-taught", read books, etc. on their own, and actually knew more than a lot of educated people.

Relativity. One mans truth is another foolishness. There is NO absolute truth as we all have a different perspective and no objective knowledge of anything at all. Because of this, it appears some people know nothing or little at all, when in reality(look an objective reality in a competely subjective world) they know it from a different angle.

The lack of education-this could be book/classroom teaching or simply life's experiences. However, there is also the factor of narrow mindedness that seems quite prominent in a lot of people. Good question!!!

I confess to be ignorant of the things I don't know.
We humans don't know a great many things. Until we discover the wisdom of those things we remain ignorant.
If you'd know for certain that you will lose your life if they send you to Iraq, would you still go?

In my opinion, ignorance is brought about by a lack of knowlwedge. If we know about something we can no longer remain ignorant.

Acceptance not based on something you can test, and laziness. So, religion and sleep. So, drink lots of coffee/Red Bull and don't subscribe to belief in higher power or lack thereof unless it's proven.
