Yes, but in practice it's not that great a hardship for us city dwellers - yet - although it's tougher in some country areas.

Basically it means taking short showers and thinking carefully about how you use water for other purposes. You can't wash cars or water lawns, and garden water is restricted: most of us are recycling bathing water or catching rainwater for gardens. Lots of us are installing rainwater tanks to catch water from house roofs.

We've had drought conditons for the last ten years in southern Australia. When I was a kid we used to play under garden sprinklers. Most kids these days have never had that experience.

Yes, the entire eastern seaboard is in the middle of a drought.
The Bureau of Meteorology has lots of information and links on this subject (see source 1).
Basically we're no getting enough rain and what we do get isn't filling our catchment areas. This means that water usable for drinking is at a critical level. (In one particular catchment area they're saying that there is only enough water to give to the city until the end of the year before it's completely depleted!)
Many cities are on different stages of water usage restrictions that affect watering gardens and car cleaning. Melbourne Water has more information on these (altough they are slightly different for each state) (see source 2)

Hi , I live in Melbourne and we are currently having a water shortage. We can still shower and wash dishes, but can't wash our cars or water the lawn. I take short showers and try to recycle as much as possible for the garden. My sister lives 2 hours away in Ballarat and they are only allowed to shower every 2nd day. Hope this helps answer your question.

Yes, Yes, Yes also in Adelaide and Brisbane, in many areas of Australia you are not allowed to water the lawns (if any are left) nor watch the car. Some people are referring to the current drought as the worst in 1000 years. The top (North) part of Australia are having lots of rain but the southern parts are in trouble.
