My husband and I are both Latinos/Hispanics...his skin color is white and mine is dark. We have being together for 9 years (married for 6 years )and we love eachother very much. We are a beautiful family with a 4 year old daughter.
In our country we are all a combination of Spanish/african/ indian...This is normal in our country. But now, we just move to Cincinnati, OH and started to experienced racism from some white people. Sometimes they just talk to my husband and completely ignore me...I feel pretty horrible. What can I do in situations like that??

The people that say that we Cincinnatians/MidWesterners arent familiar with people of other races are ignorant themselves of how things really are out here. Cincinnati has a large Hispanic population, especially in the Hamilton/West Chester/Fairfield areas. What you have to realize is that Cincinnati, like many other MidWestern Cities, is really struggling with the Illegal Immigrant problem right now. Its possible that you have just run into some folks that potentially have some very strong feelings about that. Still, I find what you are describing to be quite strange. Cincinnati has a very large minority population, so if some white people are "ignroing" you, then they also have to be ignoring about 50% of their colleagues and neighbors. That just doesnt sound right. Is it possible that you have just been a little sensitive? Has anything more substantial occurred? Right now, all that I can see is that you have "perceived" racism- got anything more concrete with people saying nasty things or doing things that are racist?

Any of us who intend to do very much in life will have to accept the fact that there will be times when we will not receive approval from everyone. And there is no way humanly possible that we can please all people all the time, let alone in a situation caused by racism. Racism is a long-standing, deep-rooted problems in some countries and cultures. You don't have to seek anyone's approval just to be at where you are and you don't have to feel terrible you don't get any social approval.

I live in a multi-racial country and have not experienced or seen any racism. But I'm sure sometimes it's all about building relationships between people. Maybe Cincinnati people have not met many Latino/Hispanic people within the city and it takes time for them to warm up to newcomers. Don't let racism become your own stumbling block to knowing people. I think as long as you continue to let your personality shine through, others will want to get to know you. I'm sure there are alot of others in Cincinnati that look beyond skin-deep.

The middle of the US can sometimes be a problem as it is not that diversified in terms of race. Just be polite and ignore it - it really is their problem not yours. It will be difficult, but try not to let them affect you too much. Racists are usually pathetic and cowardly at heart. Just be yourself and they will adjust and you will make friends and be a part of things.

Can you speak to your priest or pastor to try to ease your acceptance into the community? That might be a good way to start. Not all people are racists and the US is actually a very accepting country for the most part.

Are you legal immigrants?

The point being- one can hardly be warm and friendly to a criminal breaking and entering and trespassing can they?- If you were an illegal immigrant, that is.
