The molting started after a shell change.

It's hard to say without more detail but crabs definitely do live through many molts in their lifetime. I've had crabs also survive very traumatic molts as well.

I need more details. Were its health conditions bad?Did it die? If it did, what did it look like after that?Did it look uncomfortable? How long has it been since you got it? How did you and the people around you treat it? How old was it when it died, if it died?

Otherwise, think about it. Do you think hermit crabs moult to kill themselves?

If the hermit crab died:

Its shell might have cut it. this might have caused fungus to grow on it.
It might just have been old.
It might have had a disease or parasite.
It might have not been suited to its living conditions.
It may have gotten stuck in its shell.

Uhh...yes.

All crabs molt...that is actually a sign they are healthy and growing...same with changing their shell.

Im not exactly sure what you are asking here.
