I sprained both my ankles 3 months ago. I was running and don't know how it happened but I didnt feel any pain, they just became swollen after a few hours. I went to the doctor, he said it's a slight sprain and told me that it would recover in about 2 weeks. After 3 weeks, it has not recovered, I went back to the doctor, he thought I had arthritis but the blood test came back negative so I'm fine. He gave me MC for a month to so that I would be excused for physical exercise in school. But it's been 3 months since and my ankles are still swollen! They look fine when I wake up in the morning but become swollen after a while even when I didn't walk around at all. It gets more swollen when I remove the compression guards to take a bath and the under-side of my feet would ache. I've rested and been a couch potato all this time but my ankles don't seem to heal! I've tried everything from ice packs and all kinds of cream to light exercise but nothing seems to working! Can someone help me?

You need a new Doctor!

There are so many things that could be going on, diabetes, a lot of circulation disorders, etc.

You did not sprain your ankles and not know it. Your current Doctor does not know what is going on and you need to find one now!

Find a medical diagnostician and go see him/her.

GOOD LUCK!

You should go back and see the doctor again. As the other responder said, you don't sprain both ankles without knowing about it.

I'm more concerned that you may be retaining water for some reason (we call this 'oedema' or 'edema' in the US). This may be harmless and caused by having abnormally leaky blood vessels but it can also be caused by problems in other parts of your body that require medical treatment. You should be properly examined and investigated by a qualified doctor - WEB ADVICE IS NOT SUITABLE FOR YOUR SYMPTOM; you need to be seen in person.

If you are retaining water it's not surprising that being a couch potato makes it worse or that it goes away in bed.

Water is constantly being squeezed out of your blood vessels and going into your tissues to supply your skin, muscles etc. This is normally drained back into your blood eventually by another set of vessels called the lymphatic system, and moving your leg muscles helps to pump this fluid through. If you don't move properly for long periods of time, fluid is more likely to stay in your legs - this is why people get swollen feet on long plane flights. When you lie flat in your bed at night, the extra fluid is still there but moves with gravity and gets spread out so you don't notice it. Once you get up the fluid rolls back downhill into the bases of your legs again.

Anyway, go and see your doctor again. It's important to know whether you have a problem that needs treatment.

Take care.
