You aren't going to find a 1-bedroom in NYC in the price range you are looking for. I live in a fairly low income neighborhood in Brooklyn and I know that the 1-bedroom apartments in my building are now going for at least $1300. I've been in my apartment for about 10 years and my rent is $963 (it was $750 10 years ago). I know very few people that pay less than I do at this point in time. My building is NOT in good condition, roaches, leaky ceiling, 6-floor walk up with no buzzer, a front door that doesn't lock and a drug problem in the building. It's a predominantly Hispanic neighborhood but lots of white people are taking over, that's why the rents are going up. It's happening all over the city. People consider themselves lucky if they find a 1 bedroom for $1200 at this point.

A friend of mine found a very large one room studio, all the way north in Queens (up by Yonkers) for $900/month. That was the best she could find that she could afford. Most of the places that are available for $8-900 are in very 'bad' neighborhoods, are much smaller and crappier than the listing claims and may be at the very edges of the city. They may call it a '1 bedroom' but it will most likely be a studio apartment.

Minimum wage here is $7.15. Jobs aren't that difficult to find, especially in the restaurant business. A lot of people I know easily find food delivery jobs and make a decent amount of money because they get tips.

Jackson Heights, Queens is known for it's large Indian and Pakistani population (one of the largest in the US)

You should check www.craigslist.com, and www.villagevoice.com. The average one bedroom in NYC (the 5 boroughs) is probably $800. You should look for a studio, or see if you qualify for salary-based affordable housing. They are building a bunch of really nice buildings all over NYC, and, depending on your salary, you could pay about $550 for a one bedroom.
