Ad-Aware is an anti adware, Spybot Search and destroy is an anti spyware. They are different and do different jobs. Its best to run more than one anti spyware; its anti virus and firewalls you only want one of.

You can install all of these;
http://www.safer-networking.org - Spybot Search and Destroy anti spyware. Use the Teatimer settings to protect Internet Explorer, and the Immuniser to stop malware getting on your pc.
Spywareblaster works with Internet Explorer and Firefox. It won't uninstall spyware that is already on your pc, but it will prevent hijacks and other malicious changes to your browser.
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com
Plus;
http://www.lavasoft.com - Ad-Aware SE Personal anti adware

And these are useful utilities;
http://www.mozilla.com/ - Firefox web browser.
https://addons.mozilla.org/search.php?q=ad+block&type=A&app=firefox - Adblock Plus
http://www.ccleaner.com - Cr*pcleaner Registry cleaner and privacy tool
Winpatrol is a handy utility that manages cookies on your pc and stops unwanted changes to your startup folder.
http://www.winpatrol.com
http://www.siteadvisor.com -MacAffee Site Advisor warns about malware on sites you are about to visit.

http://spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm - The Spyware Warrior site identifies fake anti spyware programs.

Norton clashes with almost anything! If you have any other Internet suite it will most likely work alongside Lavasoft's Ad-Aware which is very good. I use Avast 4 Home and Ad-Aware but I also run Vet Anti-virus and Spybot Search and Destroy without any problems.

Norton used to be the best, then they became corporate. I dumped the whole lot after the last upgrade.
It was too slow to use, it wasn't doing it's job, and I suspect (though only suspect) it was letting selective people in.
I got 3 good freeware programs, and have never been happier.
You'll need a firewall, Antivirus and Spy/Adware but I promise you'll be happier without Norton.
You can also get pop-up blockers with your favourite toolbars (google or Yahoo etc.). Though word of warning, Microsoft Windows automatic updates do things they do not tell you about. You need them, but they can often clash with a toolbar and cause problems.

Ad aware won't clash. It is really anti virus programs that clash and cause breakdown. I run Ad Aware and Spybot once a fortnight and it doesnt clash with any software on my computer. It doesnt run permenantly it just sweeps the computer for 5 mins or so for cheeky ads. Go for it, its safe to do so ;)

From what I have found, its is always good to run a second scanner type program as some programs do catch all the items. For example i use Ad-Aware and SpyBot.

Dont use anything with Norton system tools.
Norton is a resource hog.

Really, just dump Norton and use MSanti spyware or defender for that, or Try AVG for both Anti virus and anti spy.. its free

DELETE norton. It only slows you computer down and does NOTHING to protect it. Especially against spyware! I promise you if you delete it your computer will actually run faster. Norton is a terrible money grubbing program. And yes, it would be worth your while to download adaware *and* spybot search & destroy from www.download.com. Run them once a month and you'll be fine. Just dont run them both at the same time.... duh
