Sounds like you have too much running. You can choose what you want to run when you start your computer by:
Start > Run > Msconfig
You may or may not want Yahoo IM or your photo software etc to run at start up in your taskbar and only open it when you need to use them. This can save computer resources and increase performance.

You can see what the processes are by googling them.

Windows XP by itself only loads maybe 20. Windows 95 loads 5-6 & windows 98 loads about 7-9. So with that being said you probably are a novice user& have 15-20 items in the taskbar(next to the clock) so now you're up to about 35-40 which is still too many> If you have 80 that leads me to believe there 30-40 viruses/spyware/trojans running on you're system. So start saying NO to theose "free downloads", shareware programs & especially the free screensavers.

No way! This is way too many processes... my suggestion would be to go to 'Start', click 'Run', and then type in 'msconfig' (without the two '). When you get in there, click on the 'Startup' tab... go through that list and uncheck the things that you don't need. If you do not know what it is that you are unchecking, then leave it and move to the next. Most of them will tell you where they are at (e.g., C:\Program Files\Firefox or something like that).
Good luck, and be careful with what you uncheck. If you uncheck the wrong things, it won't harm your system, but may keep you from having the kind of protection your system needs (e.g., unchecking an antivirus or firewall program from the list).

Assuming that you're not exaggerating, no it isn't. There will always be a lot of processes running on your machine, but honestly you only need to have a handful running. My computer has roughly about 35 running at any given time. You likely have some spyware running on your machine, and you're probably better off doing a full system scan.

You need to look at you "applications".. most computers will have several processes running at the same time, not a big deal, you can go to your system tray and shut off what you don't need to have running.. just don't turn your anti-virus off if you are surfing the web or anything.

If you need to stop an application just right click on it, then click on "go to process" and then right click on the one that comes up highlighted and click on "end process tree" that way you don't have something else from the application running in the background.
