There are alot of medicines and drugs that you can buy here in Spain which are not allowed to be purchased in the UK without prescription. In my opinion I think it's a good thing as otherwise you may want to self medicate and that could be potentially dangerous in the long run.
I have bought antibiotics over the counter in the past, but how do we know whether we are taking the right stuff for the job just because we've been prescribed it before.
The UK are right in having strict guidelines on certain things, it's for your own good.
However you could always try and purchase it on line.

Melatonin is a supplement available over the counter in America. In the UK melatonin can be prescribed and is also available from the Internet.
The only precaution is that some people have become depressed with melatonin, so be aware of this. On the container it also states melatonin should be avoided in autoimmune disorders... [and certain other conditions including epilepsy and leukemia].

Why are you interested in melatonin?
If you're looking for something that has a similar effect on nervousness and anxiety, as well as a natural sleep aid, valerian root, in my opinion, does a much better job. I'm not sure about the UK, but I know here in the US, it's widely available. There are several downsides though. The first, and in my opinion, foremost, is that it stinks. It's been described as smelling like rotting feet, old cheese, sweaty socks, etc. Interestingly enough, it doesn't taste bad at all. My fiance takes it in capsules we found at Walmart.
The second thing is that, while it's not addictive, you can suffer from withdrawal symptoms if you take it for too long at high doses. These symptoms are similar to those of people who are on, say, Xanax for too long. They can include everything from, simply, anxiousness and upset stomach to seizures and comas.
It is believed to be, otherwise, safe. It can cause drowsiness (heck, it's used as a sleep aid), but if you take too much, it will cause headaches, nervousness and insomnia (basically, it does the complete opposite of what it's supposed to). Just start off slow and work your way up to a dosage that's appropriate for you. And, as always, talk with your doctor about any possible side effects for any medications you're taking.

It hasn't been licensed for use in the UK. Just as in Spain you can buy antibiotics over the counter, or in the USA packages of 200 paracetamol.
The UK has some of the strictest medical regulations. It could be simply because not enough research has been done, or because the finding were inconclusive, or considered too risky for sale.
