My tank has been having several problems. My Jack dympsey[sp] has been running it. Killing other south americans his size, hes just out of control. I dont know how to fix it, I've redone the territory several times.

My black convicts die right when I bring them home

And now one of my chichlids entire stomach is white. And when its done swimming. It sinks to the bottom and lands on its side. It looks in pain, I dont know what to do. I classified it as bloat and bought an all purpose fish pill that disolved, knowing it takes about 48 hours for the pill to actually take effect, I was still wondering if it even was bloat. A kidney disease maybe? I just do not know.

Perhaps you would be better off with a hamster or a kitten?

First off your Jack is just being himself. Sometimes you get fish like that. I have a Jewel cichlid that runs my tank he even picks on my pacus that are 3 times his size. That is why they are called aggressive fish. If he's getting to aggressive it might be time to get rid of him.

As for that Black convict. Keep in mind that when bring fish home the water that the fish might have come from, might have different ph balance as your tank. If you took any fish from a tank thats ph was 7.0 and added it to you tank with a ph of 6.5 the fish can go into shock and might die from that. My best advice for this case is always test your water before adding fish, and ask to see a water test of the tank from the store your buy the fish from. If the store rolls their eyes and doesn't want to test their water I wouldn't buy my fish from there anyways. And ask them what kind of guarantee they offer on their fish (most stores offer a 3 day with a water sample). Also research what water ph, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate is right for each fish. I would also recommend having a second tank, so when you bring new fish home you can adjust and keep an eye on them for a few days before adding them to your tank this will help prevent the sped of diseases.

As for your poor white bellied chichlid. its hard to tell you what it could be. I have seen just about every type of fish disease there is, but everyone describes them differently. From what you have discribed it sounds like a parisite to me. If you can tke a picture of him and ask someones at the pet store that you buy your fish, (this only really helps if they know what they are doing and not just faking it) Better yet, email it to me and i'll have a look at it. alckelly@yahoo.com

It is true, it might be bloated, or it might have swim bladder. this happened to a goldfish of mine before. There is no cure yet...

If you are uncomfortable with the Dempsey, keep it somewhere else until you can get rid of it. you can hardly blame it-most cichlids are just territorial and aggresive-it's their nature.

Are you sure the conditions of your aquarium are suitable for black convicts?(e.g.ph level) Maybe you would be better off without them. Go do some research on them if you can.

Take the fish out and put him in a hospital tank .Pour a diluted solution of salt/water into the tank, add your fish. This will aid his buoyancy and help him to fight infection.Feed him on the pea diet it is a very affective treatment + a smaller amount of his normal food. You could also have a water problem in your main tank, do a 50% water change, then the following week a 25% water change.Add a salt solution to the water this helps the fish fight any infection problems.Your fish could also be a girl she may be egg bound , stroke her tummy this will assist in the ejection of the eggs.Go to everything about fish on the web its great.Check out info if they are warm water fish (tropical) first.
