It really depends on where your interest lays. I studied from Chaucher to modern in English Literature at uni, and some I liked, some I didn't. I can't stand DH Lawrence, for example. Thomas Hardy's "Tess of the D'Urbervilles" was a hard rid, and I thought a bit of a limp ending.

Personally I like Jane Austen, Charlotte Bronte, Anne Bronte, other such authors. Shakespeare is actually a good read. Particularly his sonnets if you like poetry. William Blake is another favourite poet, as is Coleridge.

Think about the genre you like, and then you'll be able to better select some books.
