It takes money to visit a dentist. A lot of people simply don't have enough money for proper dental and medical care. Also, many people are afraid to go to the dentist.

Fear.

While I maintain regular dental visits (every six months), if something happens in-between those visits - a lost filling, whatever - I will put it off until I am almost insane with pain before I call the dentist.

Funny you should ask this question. I was at the dentist yesterday and she told me about this women who needed root canal 8 months ago. Her tooth was so infected. Reason for not going ? Her husband did not believe in any kind of medical treatment.
Most people, fear.

Only the most excruciating pain can motivate me to go see a dentist, i guess that speaks for alot of other people.

I think most people fear the Dentist and that is why they wait so long ...

hmm..coz unless there's something that doesn't bother u to a great extent..ur too lazy to take some steps against it...
i got my glasses when i couldn't c what my teacher was writing on the board, n she asked me to c a doctor...it was kinda embarassing for me that she said that in front of the whole class
i got to know that the power of my lens is -2, had i checked it earlier, it wouldn't have increased to -3.5(my current eye sight)
same goes for my teeth, got two root canals done...only after i realised my biggest asset(my smile) is loosing its charm coz of my teeth...

lack of dental insurance and lack of immediate cash to pay up front....maybe the monetary reasons, but others could be fear of drills and someone poking their hands in your mouth...any number of reasons
