before digital memory space was at a premium. companies took their important files and had them put on microfilm. microfilm was a way to shrink the copies down to almost microscopic size. to see them you put them under a piece of equipment that looked like an old overhead projector except it had a screen. It shined a light through it and it appeared in the screen. there were a lot of items on that piece of microfilm so you had to move it around to find the item you wanted to look at.
