Most likely, it is a carryover of the benefits of caring for the weak or sick or of being a mother and seeing a baby die.

Animal mothers certainly mourn the death of their babies. They will stay with or keep returning to the dead body for several days.

It would also be an extension of empathy. Empathy has been shown to exist in monkeys and apes and our human empathy is an expansion of that.

Any species that cares for and helps the old and sick would also feel a sense of loss when a close friend or relative dies.

what?? people mourn to honor someone they lost. it is a personal thing a lot of the time.
