It united the Germans under Bismarck, and it sent shockwaves through the Austrian empire, that ultmately led to WW I.

Ill try to give you a short answer. Germany under kaiser Wilhelm II was a loose cannon. His militaristic projects included the build-up of a strong German navy. This alianated Germany from Brittain and together with the increasing economical power of Germany made this drive the British into an alliance with France, who were already in alliance with Russia. Meanwhile, romanticism in combination with the industrial revolution on the European continent and imperialism together helped form nationalism as a handy tool for rulers to control the mass and send them into a war. When the archduke was eventually shot, this combination set the chain of events in motion.
