Elldabee, if you don't drive to Fort Wayne, wont you need a car when you arrive regardless?
Other travel options to Fort Wayne are:
~~ You can bus it all the way (not the choice mode of transportation). Greyhound have a service from Oakland to Fort Wayne, see link below:
http://www.greyhound.com/scripts/en/TicketCenter/step2.asp
~~ Amtrak does not offer service to Fort Wayne directly.
The nearest station to Fort Wayne is in Waterloo, IN.
24 miles north of downtown Fort Wayne.
You would then need to bus or taxi to your final destination:
http://www.amtrak.com/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=Amtrak/HomePage
~~ Fort Wayne does have an International Airport, it is the only Midwest commercial airport, (other than Chicago's O'Hare) with a 12,000-foot runway.
As of 2007, Passenger service was provided by Air Wisconsin (United Express), Allegiant Air, American Eagle, CommutAir (Continental Connection affiliate), Atlantic Southeast (Delta Connection), Comair (Delta Connection), Mesaba (Northwest Airlink), Pinnacle (Northwest Airlink), and SkyWest (United Express).
You will need to check on all of these airlines to find which ones fly from Oakland/San Francisco.
Many other airlines will get you to O'Hare in Chicago and Greyhound will then get you to Fort Wayne in 5hours.
So you do have a few choices.
Elldabee, there are a number of things you need to consider:
* The time you have for getting there.
* The money you can budget for traveling expenses (not only the mode, but other incidental costs too)
* Whether you need transport for your stay in Fort Wayne.
* The logistics of the trip (do you want to be sitting in a bus terminal for half a day waiting for another connnection).
* And lastly, how do you enjoy to travel?

I'm from fort wayne. What you need to do is either fly into fort wayne international (FWA) or you could fly into indianapolis(IND). I would NOT tell anybody to fly into chicago and drive the three hours to ft. wayne. It is a pain in the a*s and the interstates are not exactly all too direct. If you fly into indy, at least you have a direct interstate rout right into ft. wayne. have fun!

Actually Fort Wayne does have an airport (FWA), and both American Airlines, and United Airlines offer one stop service from Oakland (OAK), via either Dallas or Chicago. As you said, it's not cheap.

I would consider flying into Chicago and taking AMTRAK the rest of the way.
Check with your travel agent.
Trains are cool.
