I was opening a fresh jar of strawberry jam this morning and I thought - ''My God, how would my grandmother open this?'' It's the same with a lot of household goods, they are just so very difficult to open. How do the packing companies reconcile themselves with making life so difficult for old or sick or weak people. There are other ways of packing things to keep them fresh, and also to enable people to reuse the containers after the product has been consumed. Isn't it time something was done about this?

I have the same problem. And I'm a healthy 21 year old! If I need to open anything like that, I usually just have to wait on my husband to get home and open it for me. They make a tool to help, but life is getting pretty sucky when you need to buy tools just to get into your food!!!

If they put the lids on loose, then some might come off, bugs or bacteria would get in, and someone would get sick and sue them for $10 quadrillion zillion dollars. So, they play it safe and make sure there ain't NOTHING getting into those jars until you open them.

If you have to blame someone, blame the litigation lawyers. You'd be amazed at just how much effect they've had on our society. So much of our society and its products & services are now designed around eliminating as much possibility of getting sued as possible.
