I've been there quite a few times, both before and after the terrorist attacks there. I think that people have different opinions on the island, depending on where they stay.
If you're going for a quick trip and don't mind crowds and annoying hagglers and loads of tourists, then go to Kuta. I prefer to stay at Legian which is at the end of Kuta beach so you;re close but it's much quieter, no hagglers or beggars out the front of your hotel and the hotels are a little better quality.
I used to love Bali but i'm not really a huge fan anymore. I feel really sorry for the people that live there but i find it hard to want to visit due to the disregard the Indonesian government have felt towards other nations - eg the Bali bombers get a couple of months in gaol, shapelle Corby gets 20 years over there for a couple of kilos of marijuana (not that i'm condoning that) its just not a fair sentence in comparison.
If you've never been you might love it, but if you've been going for years you might not like the increase of westernisation.
Think about going to Thailand which is cleaner, friendly and a little more untouched (except for Bangkok.)
Enjoy your trip though!

I went there once. And I definitely wanto to visit again when I have time.
It's a beatiful place. And somehow you can feel presence there. I mean of the gods and goddesses. Maybe it's because you can find Hindu temple everywhere, and how they put offering to the gods practically everywhere. The mountain and the beaches are equally good. The culture is still strong even though you can find westernization in most places.

I wasn't there myself. My daughter & her husband are living in Indonesia for work. They are in Kalimantan, another island, but they say that Bali is worth seeing.
