Any OBGYN's or Assistants out there? I can't find any information about this method during the few weeks of the 1st Trimester? Does anyone know if this method is banned? Thanks!

What about a D&C ? So many letters... and I know what each one stands for, but which methods are done at which point in a pregnancy?

Incredible! I had no idea that needing research for informative purposes would cause such a controversy. I am still needing the answers as to when each of these procedures are done at which point in pregnancy. I am not wanting opinions. I apologize if my question was not clear on that. Fortunately I did not get a chance to read the horrid post before it was deleted, and I apologize to the remaining posters who had to read it. Anyone know the answers? I would appreciate it. Thank You.

D&E is usually done in the second trimester. There are other, less invasive and faster ways of doing the same thing in the first trimester.

As far as it being banned, it depends on where in the world you are. SInce most western communities will allow up to 20 weeks then it is performed in those areas where it is most appropriate. If it is banned then all similar procedures are usually banned.

Added: Yes, a D&C is one method that is used in the first trimester, but it is not recommended , and is used only when a vacuum method is unavailable. A D&C, being manual, means there is a higher risk of uterine perforation and/or scarring (although the risk is still very small) and the overall risk of infection is higher. A D& C is also a surgical procedure.

A vacuum method (also called suction-aspiration method) is normally safer and there is less risk of secondary complication, it is non-surgical, and the risk of infection is lower.

Added: As advised A D&E is normally done second trimester (that's the middle of the pregnancy, approx 13-25 weeks) and either a D&C or a suction curette are performed in the first trimester. But it really depends on WHY it needs to be done, to assess exactly WHAT is done. A termination vs a miscarraige, for example. Could be the same weeks into the pregnancy but different procedures need to be performed.

I am sorry to see you are so bitter Heather, I understand what it is to have difficulties getting pregnant, but as the poster below you mentioned the asker was after information, as I was when I miscarried 2 babies in a row, I needed alot of information on a D&C before I could decide if thats what I wanted to go through or if I would wait for nature to take its course, sometimes through no fault of our own nature takes a wrong turn and things happen, perhaps befor jumping the gun and pulling out your soap box next time...dont just jump to the closest conclusion.

As for the askers question, after all the research I did for the above 2 miscarriages, a D&C can be done, but as the first poster answered, it can cause problems with scarring and uterine perferations...I hope this helps a little...

To the poster above - why did you assume that the person asking this question was asking for personal reasons?

Sounds like they just wanted information, which is what the midwife who first answered the question gave them - no judgement, no assumptions, just information. Which is all people want sometimes.

I understand that you might be very upset with the situation you are in, I am a bit fertility challenged myself, but laying a moral guilt trip on someone and calling them a horrible person and a murderer when you have no understanding of why they even asked the question is definitely way out of line.

If you want to adopt a child there are many many kids out there on waiting lists. Just google!

***IN CASE ANYONE THINKS WE ARE MAD - the poster I am referring to came back on and deleted her very over the top answer....******

i have had two miscarriages one did not leave my body properly and I had to have a D&C I was put under some cramping when I woke up but after a couple of days I was fine the basically scrape your uterus and lining to remove what they need to but that happened 10 years ago and I went on 5 to 6 years later to have two beautiful healthy children there was some scarrring but with modern tech both of my prenancies where carefully monitored.
