open a hot faucet, does water come out? yes? good. no, facing the front of the water heater there are 2 pipes coming out the top, the right side is the cold feed to the heater, look for a valve on this pipe and make sure it is turned all the way open, counter-clockwise.
second option, near the bottom of the heater there should be a large dial just to the right of where the gas goes in to the heater, what is is set at? it starts at "vacation" and ends at "hot" warm is in the middle, look for the notch and set the dial so that it towards the hot side.
Or just call the landlord.
well at least it only took 2 days for you and your bean to discover a leak big enough to use all your hot water, congratulations.

Call the landlord back & explain that it is hot but you are not getting any hot water, they must not have opened the valve to release the hot water so all you are getting is the cold. They just did not turn the knob(valve to release the hot water)Or the valve is turned off under your sink for hot water to enter.

OMG I just had a new hot water tank put in today too. For the same reason NO hot water. I still have the same problem as well. The only thing I can chalk it up to is the tank not being big engouh to fulfill my needs :)

Check and see if the installer opened the water valves. Check the intake and outlet.

did the pilot get lit, if it did then there could be air pockets in the gas line that will cause the pilot to be blown out.
no it is not going to blow up. but you would need a plumber to purge the line for you.

Is the gas turned on outside and at the heater? Is the pilot light lit (instructions should be inside the panel door).

There should be a reset button, I think you hold it for about 3 seconds.

Little flame? turn the thermostat dial up a little till it "clicks"
Now, carefully watch for a big flame. (WHOOMP)
No big flame? Faulty thermostat.
