Usually when a man is a widower and has a child (at least in sitcom world) it is best not to ask. Asking him would bring up the whole drama of the love triangle thing with Otis. Otis is the town drunk because he shot Mrs. Taylor when she chose Andy over him and he never got over it. He used five bullets with Barney's gun-that's why Barney can only carry one bullet in his pocket-Andy doesn't want Otis to get a hankering for Helen Crump and blow her away too.

It was never revealed. I saw the very first Andy Griffith show. Andy was a widower and his housekeeper was getting married and leaving and Aunt Bee came and took care of them. At first Opie couldn't warm up to her, and she was going to leave, then Opie said "she can't go" she doesn't know how to do anything - like play ball for put a worm on a fishing pole. And she stayed and became part of the family - as it should be.

it was a tragic and unspoken tragedy that occurred just outside mayberry one night, just be hing Wally's gas Station,,, most thought it was a still explosion that killed her, but the autopsy report said accidental drowning from falling out of the boat catfishing one night,,, but some of the old timers say she was having an affair with a deputy from mount pilot and andy found the pair together, of course his body was never found, most assumed he just left town unannounced,,, being Andy was the sheriff, no one questioned his credibility when the police report cam back clearing him of any charges, but there are still a few like otis, who hide the dark and buried secret of her death,,,

I don't think they ever revealed that --not on the show nor in any specials or interviews.
I think they only mentioned her briefly in two episodes: the first one and the one where aunt bea finds love.
