You need diapers, blankets, onesies, burp cloths, baby wipes, diaper rash cream, socks or booties, baby wash/shampoo, formula(if the mom isn't breastfeeding), bottles, pacifier, etc.

The real BASICS?
- Clothing: one-piece suits are easy, hats, and receiving blankets.
- Diapers.
- Baby soap (Johnson's is good, and the head-to-toe one can double up as baby shampoo).
- Diaper rash ointment.
That's really all a newborn baby needs at first.
Of course, you might want to add the extras, to make life easier:

- A crib (although technically not imperative if you'll be co-sleeping)
- a stroller/car seat
- a carry-pouch thing in which you can carry baby on your chest
- Baby bottles and nipples and formula if you plan to bottle feed (although breastfeeding is so much healthier AND makes life so much simpler)
- Breast pump
- Lansinoh or other lanolin ointment for mom (believe me, you'll need this if you plan to breastfeed)
- a baby bag to carry all this stuff in when you go out!

For a basic list you don't need tons of stuff. This is to be basic right? Why basics would you need?

Food (baby food)
Drink (mother's milk, or formulas)
Bed ( simple, nothing fancy, cotton, not bumpers- don't want them to suffocate)
Transportation (stroller, and car seat)
Bathroom supplies (diapers, wipes, and ointment if needed)
Activities (maybe a pacifier, nice soft toys that they can bite on - this is just when they are young)
Clothes (keep the feet and head warm during winter and fall, keep them cool during spring and summer)

I think that should do. Babies dont NEED STUFF, they just need the basics.

some important items:
- car seat
- cot
- pram
- nappies, if you decide to use disposables, make sure you have some cloth nappies on hand, you may never use them but you dont wanna be caught out. they can also be used as a spew rag
- camera to capture the memories
- clothes, size appropriate for the seasons
- a dummy (we decided we didnt want to use a dummy but it doesnt hurt to have one on hand)
- bottles, even if the plan is to breastfeed, some babies have attachment problems, etc and you may have no choice other than to bottle feed, and breastfeeding stops eventually so its not like they wont get used
- a nappy bag, to carry everything you need when going ANYWHERE with baby

thats the basics that i can think of off hand, but there are so many things out there now that can make things easier, but it is so easy to go overboard in the excitment of the moment and wanting only the best for baby. we have all the gadgets and gizmos, much of which goes unused lol. as long as you have the basics, then you'll be fine

Tons of stuff. A crib or bassinet, diapers, bottles, pacifiers, burp cloths, baby powder, baby lotion, baby oil, baby wash and shampoo, bibs, receiving blankets, clothes, car seat, formula or a breast pump, breast pads (to help prevent leakage), lanolin (for sore cracked nipples), cocoa butter (for stretch marks), teethers, baby brush, nail scissors or clippers, shoes (1 pair for now will do fine), anything and everything). I waited til after my baby shower so I wouldnt have to buy stuff that I already had. Go to a Babies R Us or even a Wal-Mart or Target and hit up the baby section. Bring lots of cash!!!

we'll I have a 4 week old baby so I know exactly what they need right now. If you have a baby shower you will get presents. Anyways Basics. There are no basics to having a baby they need a lot of things but heres what I use most.

**A carseat- to bring home baby & to take to dr apts.
**Diapers- newborn and size 1 right now you will go through a ton of these.
**Onsies- they keep diapers togeather and keep clothes from scratching baby.
**One piece outfits like sleepers- they are the most comfertable untill umbilical cord falls off
**Clothes- different sizes start with newborn
**Bibs- they spit milk out and you will wash a lot of clothes unless u have bibs
**Socks- babys feet gets cold plus u can put them on hands to keep baby from scratching face
**Bottles- if feeding formula theres different kinds
**Diaper Bag- to carry babys things when u go bye bye
**Recieving blankets- several u will use them for tons of things
**Blanket- to wrap baby or to cover carseat when going out
**baby wipes- u will go through these like water
**grooming-nail clippers, themometer
**Lotion, oil, baby powder, shampoo, rubbing alchol and q tips- to clean umbilical cord
Crib or bassinett- something for baby to sleep in

There are other things too but I guess u dont have to have them

Swing
Bouncy chair
these work great when u want to put baby down for a few min
