Free hydrogen, and free oxygen are combined during the combustion of these gasses to form water. That is about as basic a scientific point that most people know of. That is middle school science stuff.

There isn't any third element making up water besides oxygen and hydrogen. What makes you think there is one, if you say that nobody knows what it is -- if nobody knows about it, then how would anyone claim that it's there?

If you electrolyse water only gaseous oxygen and hydrogen is formed and this is proved throught the flame tests. No other substance is formed which proves water is composed only of hydrogen and oxygen.
And because there is 2 hydrogen for each oxygen double the volume of hydrogen is produced compared to oxygen! makes sense =]
