So far everyone is getting a thumbs up because they are all good answers. Keep in ind I have a 4 year old who may wet the bed. Expecting puppies. and going threw menanpouse, And a 17 year old with phenomea, If this helps anyone come up with more answers. I did take another 3 hour nap so it is now 7. But just once I would like an 8 hour full night. And I only take the sleeping aids once a week. The rest of the time I am up ever1-2 hours.

You might go see a Certified Nutrition Therapist. You might be having a problem with your adrenals. These are located just above your kidneys. They are very important.
Since I am not a doctor I can only tell you of my own experience. I am an x-breast cancer pt. Yeah, well listen when you've done chemo you don't take drugs of any kind unless you have to...I'm going to talk about what I do when I "can't shut down"
Make sure your bedroom is completely pristine....make it a wonderful room to be in for sleeping.
Turn off the tv, music, computers at least an hour before you retire. These items create a lot of stimulation and you can't begin to relax for bed without shutting them down first. I don't know how people go to bed after listening to the 10pm news at night...
Take a warm scented bath get in bed and have a meditation time. I wear a sleep mask now and it changed my life.
when I have a bad time "stopping my mind" I also start to count backwards with numbers. (counting sheep, oh please, lol, that'll have me going to the frige) I do this 9,999...You need a large number to concentrate on to stop your mind from thinking of everything else.
You optimum goal is to get minimum 6+ hours of sleep a night. Always go and get in bed when you NOTICE that you are winding down. Yawning... Obey your body...it will tell you when you need to hit the sheets.
Oh, one more thing...start getting off ALL PROCESSED FOODS. And especially sugar...I know it's a tough one but you wouldn't believe what a difference it will make in your life.
You see after I had cancer, I turned into a diabetic, thyroid pt, and sleep apea. So far I have gotten off insulin shots, and one diabetic drug, (one more to go) and I am about to sell my sleep machine. I am losing weight. And I have more energy than before I had cancer in 1990.
Best wishes for your health and zzzzz's.JM

First of all, talk with your Doctor about getting off the sleep medications you are on....they are not helping, therefore, stop feeding them into your body. After taking perscription medications for awhile, your body builds up a resistance to them.

There are many natural things out now that can aid you in relaxing, turning your body down to rest. Teas, scents and even soothing sounds help. I know it sounds kinda dull and maybe even dumb, but the natural things are much easier on your body and mind...as well as your kidneys.

Also, what other medications are you taking? Every medication interacts with other medications. You may be taking something that fights with the sleeping pills and tranquilizers that you are taking now. This is why I recommend natural things, they don't normally interact with your other medications..(If you're taking them).

Try to set a time each night that you go to bed. As was stated above, listen to your body...if you are on line chatting with friends and you start yawning, say good-night and log off. Put on your jammies (if you wear them) and head to bed. You may not fall asleep immediately, but allow your mind to rest, don't think about what you might be 'missing' on line, tell yourself you NEED the rest and allow your mind and body to relax.
I actually start at my feet, focusing on only my body and mentally make my feet relax. Working my way up my body, I rarely make it past my hips before I'm sound asleep.
When you wake up, don't jump out of bed...lay back down, don't worry over the time and start willing your body to relax again. You might just fall asleep again.

I hope you get more rest, I know how you feel.

Good luck and please let us know if anything works.
