It depends on what you intend to use your computer for...if it's gaming, it won't get you very far, but if it's for light applications, like sending and receiving emails, you should be just fine.
This computer I am on right now is operating on windows 98 SE, pentium 3, it's 1.1 ghz with 256 mb ram and an 80 disk hard drive. I use it strictly for emails, no gaming here, no time.
Windows 98 SE no longer gets support from microsoft, and I am trying to learn windows XP media center from my son, now windows vista is out on the market. I figure that, with my luck, by the time I learn how to use windows XP versions, that will probably be outdated too.

virtual memory has nothing to do with how much physical memory or hard drive space you have available, it is set by your system. Assuming that you are currently running Windows XP if you go to the "system" icon in your control panel, then select the "advanced" tab. Click on the "settings" button under "performance" and then select the "advanced" tab. Once there click on the "change" button under the "virtual memory" section. Most of the time you want this to be set as "system managed". In some situations there would be a more ideal setting for your individual system, but if you do not know much about this you will probably do more harm than good so just make sure that it is "system managed".

I would consider getting a little bit more of RAM. Although 512MB is sufficient for most tasks, an extra 512MB stick (so a total of 1GB) should allow your computer to use less virtual memory...

Virtual memory does have something to do with hard disk space. If your HDD is 2,048 mB, you cannot set a 4,096 mB page file. Anyway, I would personally set your page file to 4gB if you do not plan to game. If you do, use 2gB.

Howzit bro!!
Ofcourse... if you have many programs running on you computer (open/ foreground) you will still run out of virtual memory.
To increase or change virtual memory...
Control Panel | System | Advanced | Performance | Advanced | Virtual memory (recommeded by me 750MB)
Danke...

it would depend on what and how many applications you are running at the time. 512mb ram is not alot. perhaps consider an upgrade. in the meanwhile you can try increasing our page file size.
