Prior to the Industrial Revolution, although not a fantastic existence, they would have risen with the sun and gone to bed when it set, as it their work was in the fields where, of course, they needed the light.
When the Revolution came, people were tied into a clock routine at the factories, where they would often work long daily shifts with little time off.

The middle class because it didn't exist before. The Industrial Revolution made it possible to shorten the gap between the aristocracy and the labourers. It made it easier for those in poverty to learn new skills and make more money. It also made it harder for the wealthy to hold onto their fortunes.
