I'm sure it's not like they are trained monkeys about it. The applause light cues the audience about when to clap as to not interfere with the flow of the dialogue.

Next time you watch a sitcom, try to just listen to the studio audience, the amount and volume of laughter and clapping is carefully manipulated. Watching a comedy is funnier in a crowded theater b/c other people laughing makes it more funny to you somehow.

(then again, maybe we are like trained monkeys)

Hah! I feel you on this question. Personally I think that applause lights are like laugh tracks -- don't need them! Its just about control -- telling the audience when it is ok for them to make a sound while recording...creating the illusion something is funnier than it really is...filling dead air....

the prompter is to ensure there are applause when the production thinks it should, otherwise ratings will go down

They needed them for 'Til Death... and How I Met Your Mother... Those shows kill more laughs....
