Get your Bachelor's degree or Associate's degree in Liberal Arts. Liberal arts are the courses that all colleges want you to take before you go into the field of your choice such as Nursing, Sociology, Teaching, etc.. Liberal Arts is a life saver. I have an Associate' degree in Liberal Arts. When I transferred to a 4-year college, I had to take a few courses for my intended major and after that I was taking nursing courses. I did not have to take no more english or any other prerequsites because I taken most of them at the community college. Ask the college's advisors or anyone and they will tell you that a Liberal arts degree is good to have and it is the foundation that all students have to take before they pursue a career of their choice. With your B.A. in liberal arts, you can attend gradute school and pick just about any major you want. Colleges look for applicants who have taken liberal art courses. I know because I just applied to graduate school.
P.S. In liberal arts, you can test just about all the majors in your school. Taking different courses will give you an idea of what career to choose. Honestly, I chose a career in nursing and then I changed to Sociology. I have a B.A. in Sociology and I am going to graduate school for Social Work. Lastly, you can get your Master's degree in Liberal Arts too.
Good luck

Hi Samantha,

Congratulations on the desire to pursue a career! You would want to start out with a bachelor's degree (which you will get upon completion of a 4-year college) and then you can pursue a master's degree if you like. I don't think it's the type of degree that will determine your career choices (because no matter what your career, most people receive a bachelor degree upon graduation from college), but more like the major that your degree is concentrated on. You have four years of college to really settle down with a major (and most college students change their majors many times during those four years), so just take some courses in one area that you particularly enjoy, and then see where your passions and interests lead you!

Good luck! :)

If you don't know what career you would like, then I would start with a major in General Studies (usually an Associate of Arts degree). This would allow you to 'test the waters' if you will, and see what some of the classes are like--get to know college life, etc. This would get you your basic classes (e.g., Biology, Speech, etc.) that could really transfer anywhere you may want to go in the future, should you decide that you like a certain major, but your school doesn't offer it.

Choose a major in something that is of interest to you and what to do with it will evolve over time. Start with a Bachelors and see where that leads you over the four years.
