I went out last night and one of my female friends had too much to drink and was visibly drunk on the side of the road. Me and my friends were doing everything to help her however random people walking past felt the need to add their two cents worth and tell us things such as 'you need to take her home' 'why did you let her get this drunk'?
This is not an isolated incident but people (usually but not always men) feel the need to tell you how to act with a drunk friend.
If you are one of these people i would like to know what you think this will achieve because it's behaviour that i don't understand at all.

Just to clarify we clearly had the situation under control there was 3 of us helping her and we were in the process of getting her home but we were waiting for our transport.

I would first question why people feel the "need" to get drunk alltogether.
We've all been there. But how many of us have asked ourselves why.
Men usually have a nature of being protective. Men feel good about themselves when they see a chance to be needed in such situations like yours. Requested or not. Much like woman feel they want to be needed by their children and lovers. It boosts self confidence.
Men and dogs have a lot in common. Men feel good when they exhibit loyality and protection. Problem is, in our society, men are not celebrated, rather overly critized.
Perception, perception.

I think most folks have a deep desire to contribute and help out someone in need. This is the same behaviour that prompts someone to stop at an accident and see if they can help or help a little kid find his mom. The "you need to take her home" folks are usually the nosy types who feel they know whats best for you. These are the folks that are usually on some home owners association board and enjoy telling you how to live your life.

Essentially it is to impress girls. Most people probably wouldn't act like a "hero" if no one was watching. Heroism is simply a ploy used mostly by guys to impress the rest of society thus increasing our chances of getting a girl. I'd say it works too.

It is innate in a person to want to be the best in whatever he does or say. It gives a feeling of being on 'top of the world' if one has succeeded in commanding someone or in doing something. It gives a lot of boost to the human ego. However, they are individuals who do not want to say or do anything unless he is asked.
