The Empire Strikes Back....no contest. mature...moody...atmospheric...thought provoking...and I felt the story every step of the way. Unique in sequel history is where all the main characters from the first movie...pay a heavy price for standing up to the empire. And everybody pays. And we see things...feel moments...witness the fleshing out of our favorite characters...as we see life being breathed into them.
I waited on a line in Boston that was five blocks long. Five.
And that was to buy tickets.
It was worth every minute I waited in line...and then some.
All that stuff that starts and follows the Phantom's Menses...uh ...Menace...I do not consider Star Wars. By then the magic was gone. Replaced by George's ego...something he should have left on the cutting room floor...along with the story that never made it into those movies.
The Empire Strikes Back Rules!

If I had to pick one... It would be Ep. IV , however I believe the complete story is told by all 6 films (and the animated clone wars movie) so I can't really separate them. I cried at the end of Sith, though. I had waited nearly 30 years for closure on what to me is the greatest fairy-tale adventure story of our generation and my lifetime in particular. When those final credits rolled, I just got emotional.
They could have done without the JarJar crap, though.

My favorite is definitely the very first one made, which is now "Episode IV." It was incredibly far ahead of its time, and in many ways revolutionized film-making of its day - not to mention that it's just plain ol' FUN :-)

Surely it was the bar scene in the first film, like nothing I had ever seen before.
