An upload is a posting on a website, adding your file to the internet. A download is to take that information from the internet, and save it on your own computer. Think of the internet as a giant clothesline. When you upload, you put a piece of clothing on the clothesline, and it is available for others to take. When the other people take [a copy] of this clothing, they are downloading it, and obtaining a copy for their own personal use.
