well a modulator is a vaccum operated valve that goes on the back of the transmission. it is used to adjust the shift timing of the transmission. there's various different one's for g.m. transmissions. depending on your truck. there's the chance that you have a 3speed 400 turbo in it. if its an overdrive then there is no modulator on the outside of the transmission. then you got a 700R4 that has a detent cable that runs from the transmission to the carb/throttle body that controls pressure and shift timing. as far as making one slip not a vaccum ported modulator, that will make one not shift gears. the detent one is possible to cause slippage.

Look for a canister shaped thing with a vacum hose/pipe sticking out of it. It should be on the back, just above the edge of the pan. If you can't find one ask Marvin the Martian. Your transmission might not have come with one.

attatched to automatic transmission case, usually at rear, small round tin can usually @ 2" dia x 2' long, should have a small vacuum line connected to it that runs back to intake manifold. modulator controls gear shift according to manifold vacuum signal
