The early Pink Floyd (with Atom Heart Mother, Ummagumma etc.) was really really good and everyone forgets that Floyd was a jam band early on.

I think it depends on my mood. Grateful Dead is by far the "Kings of the Jam bands" as they are pioneers in psychedic jamming with the Allman Brothers close behind them. I do enjoy the Allman's as well. New Jam band though it would have to be Phish. I think they rock, and it disappoints me you say "hopefully not phish". Kellar Williams is an incredible one-man-jam and String Cheese Incident is always fun as well is moe. If you asked me and I had to pick one it would be Grateful Dead, after all I do have a Steal Your Face tattoo on my leg.

Grateful dead is just like the original jam band, classic stuff, its always good to listen to them.
Now there is so much variety in the jam catagory that its up to anybodys own decision who they think is the best.
Personally I like GD, RAQ, Umphreys Mcgee, Phish and God Johnson the best.
