My husband is from Costa Rica, and he's been wanting to go back to visit some of his family. But he wants to take me with him, the only problem, I am afraid to death of flying. The other ways of transportation, are out of the question. Driving would take approx. 2weeks and by plane 1hr. and 45mins. My fear has grown even worse since 9/11. What would you do??

Okay seriously. I am Costa Rican. I go visit pretty often, it's not bad at all. From where live in the states, it's just under 4 hours and it goes by sooo quickly. 9/11 affected everyone. It affected me too. I will never look at a plane the same way, but you know what? We can't think like that forever. We can only be afraid for so long before we realize that by being afraid we're stopping ourselves from living.
Will you have TONS of fun in C.R.?
Yes.
Will you come home with many memories to cherish?
Yes.
Will you totally forget about your fear of flying once you get there and see the beauty that is C.R.?
Yes.
You seem to love your husband, therefore, don't you want to try to please him?
Uh, yeah!
So, therefore, stop worrying yourself silly and go already.
We Ticos get a really bad "mal de patria" if we don't see our homeland for awhile.
P.S.-Say hello to my fellow Tico.
Pura Vida!!

Fears can be faced. Millions of people a year fly safely. Statistically, it's safer than driving, and it requires less effort.

Therefore, a phobia more accurately describes what you have.

You aren't going to get over this quickly in 2 weeks without even getting into a plane before then, without help.

I have 2 suggestions:

1. Go to a hypnotherapist. I know someone that had their appendix taken out without anesthesia while hypnotized. It's real. It works.

2. Go to your doctor. Tell him the problem. He can give you some meds that will make you proud and eager to fly. You won't even know you are off the ground. I'm not talking about stuff making you all loopy and drunk either. They've got psych meds now similar to those for depression that will pretty much put the kibosh on your fears while leaving you awake and functioning.

Good luck

My parents were divorced when I was 4 years old; my father lives in Minneapolis and I live in Virginia. I have been flying up to see him approximately 3 times a year since I was 6 years old (I am now 20).
About 2 years ago, I became extremely afraid to fly. I tried to will the fear away, assuring myself that I had done this many times before, but I began to suffer panic attacks. I resorted to anti-anxiety meds and have tried kava kava, both of which worked mildly.

I would suggest talking with your doctor about this. Most of the women in my family share in my fear and fly just fine with some proper medication (the anxiety meds I had were not prescribed, they were given to me by a friend - only a doctor can prescribe a medication that will really work for YOU). If you are against prescription drugs, try some kava kava - it's an herbal supplement that helps to relax your body and mind.

Air plane hijacks/terrorists/bombings are very rare now a days. Every airport has stepped up security ALOT more now than ever. But I am afraid you are one of those people who have type of phobia, called viatophobia, also known as fear of flying. I would say that just go with your husband, try not to notice anything about the fact that your flying, and just have a good time.

Flying with a commercial airliner is still the safest way to travel. Think about the 15,000 planes that take-off and land safely every day of the week for years.
Also, seek professional help if this is a real problem for you. No reason to be scared, and a doctor can help you. Hope this helps!

perhaps visit the airport a few times. watch the planes take off and land. If you could get yourself on board some airplanes that are not being used perhaps you could get used to them more and increase your comfort level/decrease your anxiety. Try to be logical with yourself about why airplanes are good, but be understanding and patient with your own fears. Also maybe a trip to your family doctor to see if anti anxiety meds for traveling are a possibility.
Best of luck to you.
