O.H.I.O. - Professional organizers use this phrase. It means Only Handle It Once, that is, when you pick something up put it where it belongs when you're finished with it and it will a) save you from having to put it up later and b) keep everything tidy.

The first answer is good. If you do this it will help you a lot. Another thing you need to do is to decide a place or time for things. Whether it's files in your computer, papers on your desk or the tools in your garage, decide where each thing should be. Make a little organized system so that you will always know where your things are when you need them. Make a folder/shelf/box for things. Then apply the O.H.I.O. method. For example if you receive a bill, take care of booking it, paying it and then put it where it's supposed to be, in the bill folder. Then you won't forget to pay it and if you need to see the bill again later for some reason you will know exactly where it is. DON'T let it lie around on the desk and postpone taking care of it till it's forgotten or lost among other papers in a mess somewhere.

If it's some activities that you need to organize, decide a certain time for each. Don't keep putting it off to fix the sink, decide that you will do it on Monday after work and actually do it then, don't put it off and go fishing instead. To keep things organized you need a tiny bit of self discipline and you need to follow the system that you make and then you'll be fine.

I hope that helps.

Do it at night. Many people accumulate mess throughout the day and when its time for bed they see the clutter and just put it off till the next day. If you organize at night you will wake up organized and make it easier to maintain that the whole day. I also plan things out on paper before hand.
