Goa is served by two railway lines:

The line from Mumbai comes in via these stations in Goa: Pernem - Tivim - Karmali - Margao, from north to south. Of these, Tivim is 5 kms from Mapusa, and perhaps 15 kms north from Porvorim. Karmali is 12 kms from Panaji, 17 kms south of Porvorim, and maybe 25 kms south of Mapusa. This is the Konkan Railway line that hugs the coastline on the west coast of India. All trains will stop at Margao (also spelt Madgaon), but some trains may not stop at the other stations. (30 kms in Goa takes around 30 - 45 minutes to travel by car. Public transport may take a bit longer)

The line from Bangalore comes in via Margao onto Vasco da gama. Both these are 35 kms and 45 kms south of Porvorim and Mapusa.

To get your basic orientation, have a look at the goa map on http://www.goaproperty.co.in/properties_in_goa_by_map.htm

The main railway station is thus Margao, but you can save a lot of time by getting off at Tivim if your train stops there. You can also check the exact schedule of stops of the train you plan to take from the indian railway website http://indianrail.gov.in/

Enjoy Goa !!

Try Pernem (PERN) or Thivim (THVM) stations. They might be closer to Mapusa and Porvorim.
