I have just moved from San Diego to Portland Oregon to change to a new university hospital, i only left my San Diego job on a leave of absence. my question is my original goal was to work both places . they are 12 hour shift so my regular schedule is 6 on 8 off that =full time but still gives me 8 days off. im thinking keeping my staff position there in San Diego also as 50% staff, and doing every other friday saturday and sunday and monday. this way i will be able to retire with 2 retirements 401ks and 2 pentions (hopefully) this still gives me off 2 days a week . another small info. i fly free so the ticket is not an issue, does this sound reasonalbe? let me knoe thanks i know this sound confusing

While having the freedom to fly without paying for it makes this kind of thing possible, my personally recommendation would be to find a second hospital in Portland where you could fill in the time - instead of traveling to do it. Even with free tickets, there are always plane delays, extra hours needed at the hospital, etc. to consider. And you don't mention what you position is at the hospital. Another avanue you might consider is to work as an EMT (if you are a nurse) or even a flight nurse with LifeFlight.

I worked a job in Seattle and commuted two weekends a month to Southern Oregon to work as an EMT (I owned my home there). I did this for three years, so I know it can be done. But it does take a tole. Many of the other EMT's on our crew work for two agencies - one is a X-ray tech at the hospital and works full time, then he does 8 24 hour shifts a month as a paramedic. He loves the double pension he's earning.

Wow, sounds crazy to me, but if you can try it for 6 months and it works than great. I myself would go crazy trying to "live" a some what normal life while trying to work 2 jobs that are about 3 hrs apart, by air. (Then again what is a normal life these days.)
Good luck

That sounds very difficult, you would soon tire of all the juggling. There are far better ways to prepare for pension time. You might want to consider residual income, which will pay far more than the pension you would be earning through working 2 jobs.

Sounds like a good idea for when you retire. But what about a love life, having a family, having fun etc. When will you have time for these things?

You won't make it.
