I remember reading that it's really a memory from which something is missing.
If one important element is forgotten then it seems that what you are experiencing now, you experienced before.
That seems to make sense (to me at least, anyway).

I see it a couple of different ways even if they are kinda similar. One is the fact that you have been there in another life. Nice simple. Ever since I was young I was sure that in your sleep you were living another life. Either different dimension or planet or whatever. But this other life was similar to the one you are living now. So with this in mind that is why it is De Ja Vu and not really a memory. So many things remind you of this but not exact. A third idea is ghosts, sure kinda funny. But if when they did finish some and is stuck here or how ever you want to think about ghosts, their memories actually scatter throughout the world or "time" and we get their fragmented memories. Just some Ideas I guess!

There is no scientific explanation, but I like the theory that we live in a multi-"verse" ( combines the universe as we perceive it and all and every other possibility thereof ), and occasionally come into some kind of contact with our "other selfs" in some or all other "verses" that enables us to subconsciously share information. So, De Ja Vu is a memory of "not- quiet-yourself" in action best described from our perspective as that what might become or could have beens.

Deja vu is a sense that one has been in a particular place or situation before when one knows one hasn't.
Similarity. A familiar scent, sound, even sight or tactile sensation can trigger unattached memories. Memories that are abstract: just a sense of recognition with no recollection of what it is you are recognising. Then we become overwhelmed with a need to find that attachment and accept some sort of paranormal or supernatural explanation even when the most logical reason is that we simply forgot why that smell, sight, taste, whatever, is so familiar.

I've heard one explanation that Deja Vu is "evidence" of reincarnation.
Another explanation I have heard is that the human brain operates with a short term memory, and a long term memory. Deja Vu occurs when something you experience at the moment, is "misfiled", so to speak, in LONG TERM memory, instead of Short term memory. Thus, a feeling of "this happened to me before, a long time ago," is produced.
I don't know, I'm not a doctor or anything, these are just two theories I've heard of.

I believe that Deja Vu is something that we did in our previous life.
