I know SSI can be used for food, and clothes. What about the fact he's 7 and needs a new bed, has been using his old toddler bed. Bedsheets and comforter for it too, if so? Can SSI go for that? Is that considered a basic need? What about for gas money sometimes, as I have places he needs to go.

I'm very careful to document what I use benefits for (he just got approved), don't want to misuse but there are some grey areas I would like clarified - it takes so long to hear back from case worker, thought this would be faster. Thanks.

Girlfriend,as long as you spend that money on your child, ain't nothing that they can do, just keep your receipts, but I doubt that you will need them. I felt the same way when I recieve my yearly income report from ssi, and they ask have I saved any money for the child or has all the money been used for my child, and I tell them yes, because that's all that they will send you for that child and that is not enough. Yes, buy that bed, don't be crazy, common sense will tell you that if it's your child'smoney than you spend it on your childs needs. Remember, just don't lie about it and make sure you turn in your yearly report because if you don't that gives them reason to question you and stop your childs money.

Yes, you can use this money for all the needs that pertains to the child...and that includes a bed and the bedding. It's a good idea to keep your receipts as well. Yes, a portion set aside as gas money for transportation is important, too. If he has any special needs, this would include anything for his benefit. As long as you're documenting everything, you'll be assuring yourself that if they do come checking, which I doubt, you'll have proof to back you up.

your caseworker should be able to give you guidelines for what is NOT OK.

Anything that is of DIRECT benefit to the child should be OK , including rent and utilities. Bed, bedding and gas money for his transport all sound ok too.

The US Supreme Court has ruled that the government cannot tell a person who recieves financial assistance how to spend their money!

You can spend it anyway you like as long as it is yours!
