stephen it depends on what kind of grass you have and if you fertillize. always mow it to about 3 inches,with a sharp mower blade.--cuting it to 3 inches will help save water and will keep some weeds from coming up.useing a sharp blade will cut the blades instead of just ripping them off,that will open it up to infections..

the key word here is 'average'. I mow mine maybe 15 times every summer. Now, my neighbors, who keep it looking like a carpet, have gas machines of one sort or another running out there three times a week . I wonder if this contributes to global warming?
