My son's pediatrician told us to wait until he was six months old, which is the American Academy of Pediatrics recommendation as of very recently. If your daughter is breastfed, then she should be getting enough, and it should be enough for quite a while. My son is 6.5 months old and he's always been above the 100th percentile for his height & weight. He's been exclusively breast-fed until two weeks ago.

Doctors recommend you wait until the baby is six months old. Babies started earlier can develop allergies easier and can also develop diabetes later on in life. That being said. I started both my kids at 4 months. If you feel this is what you want to do, start with rice cereal. Put it in a bowl and feed her with a spoon. If she is not sitting up supported yet, then put her in a bouncy seat and feed her from there. You want to use a spoon because this lets her know that a spoon is for food and a bottle is for milk. You can confuse her and slow her using a spoon if you put the cereal in the bottle. Make the cereal soupy and feed it to her a little at a time. She is going to spit it out at first, but if you mix it with formula or milk, it will be easier for her. After a while, you can make it thicker. Don't start on fruits and veggies until she is older. I would ask your doctor before taking any ones advice, but this is what I did with both of my children and it has worked so far.

Seems most people here are presuming you are breast feeding, breast is best, but if you were like me and unable to do it for extended periods of time then formula is fine...these days formula is so close to mothers milk its really not a big drama...
The recommended age here in Australia is about 4 months, however, if your baby is not getting enough then by all means start her on solids...try just a teaspoon or two of rice cereal in her bottle to thicken it up a little and gradually progress to it a bowl...
I have no problems with starting early solids feeding, both my girls started younger than 4 months and both are happy healthy normal weight kids. Lets face it, its better to have a happy baby with a full tummy that sleeps well, eats well and is happy rather than a unhappy, grumpy baby that wont sleep because its hungry.
The only thing you may notice when you start solids...and this is for any age...your baby may undergo changes in the poo department, which is perfectly normal...if baby gets constipated, which can happen when you go to solids again i stress at any age...not going to the toilet doesnt necessarly mean baby is constipated, it can be normal for a baby to wait to poop for anywhere up to 4 or 5 days...but constipation is different, baby will be straining to push out little hard pellets that resemble bunny poo...this is constipation...this can be treated easily with a teaspoon of brown sugar in its bottle at every feed till its poo goes soft again...brown sugar will in no way harm baby...
Sorry a little excessive in the information department...but i hope it helps

Pedistricians recommend that you wait until five months but it is usualy ok to start between 3 and 5 months. Just remember only introduce on food every one or two weeks so you can learn what he is allergic to, if any. The rice cereal in the formula is a great idea but if you are nursing it is ok to mix a little rice cereal with 3 to 4 ouces of room temperature distilled water. There are formulas that have rice added to them already you may want to look into that.

You should start by buying the power flakes rice cereal and adding it to the milk. You can cut a bottle with a little bigger hole. Maybe a spoonful or more to a bottle, that will fill up the baby and set them on their way to eating baby foods. Usually you introduce the rice cereal because its light and then baby foods gradually. Four to six months old is the time to start introducing baby to different kinds of foods. But don't get baby fat, just get baby fed. lol

Never ever put rice cereal in her bottle and docs say wait until 6 months old. If she is breastfeeding give her a 4 oz. bottle after wards to keep her full and if taking a bottle give her an extra 2 oz. but make sure it's hunger and not sleepiness cause she should be sleeping at least 16 hours per 24 hours.

You should check with your pediatrician to be sure it's ok in your baby's case. You can add a little rice cereal to her milk and have her drink it from her bottle. You'll start with a tiny bit at first so she can adjust to the thickness then increase the amount of cereal over a period of a week. Babies can't really do solids so she'll have to suck it through the bottle at first kind of like a milkshake. Once she gets used to it say about 5 mos. you can try mixing it in a bowl and giving it to her from a spoon.

Dont start of with stage 1 stuff right away. SPOON FEED your baby rice cereal..make it a little watery at first. (Dont put it in their bottle unless a doc recomends it...babies need to learn how to EAT their food..not drink it!) Start out doing it once a day and work your way up. My twins are almost 5 months and my doc recommended that I give it to them until they are 6 mo old and not to start on fruits and veggies until 6 mo. Its fun to feed it to them and most recommend that you start veggies at 5 months and hold off fruits till 6 because they will just love sweets if you feed it to them first. You need to make sure your baby does not have an allergy to what you give them so feed them ONE new food a week..once you are sure that they are fine with it you can add other foods! But right now just give them rice cereal because it is low in proteins and proteins are normally what people are allergic to! No oatmeal either..not until later. Just rice cereal and then incorporate other veggies! When in doubt ask your ped

Well I would definitely NOT recommend feeding a baby food from a bottle - I would also hold off on the food until 6 months.

One way to perhaps satisfy your babies hunger if you are b/feeding is express a little of each side (to drain the foremilk) and attach her for the more nourishing fattier hind milk. She MAY be more statisfied using this technique...

It is now recommended that you wait until your baby is at least 6 months old to give her anything but breast milk. But some pediatricians say it's okay to start between 4 and 6 months. If you have a history of allergies in your family it's best to wait until at least 6 months.

I didn't start my son on solids until he was nearly 7 months old. He was exclusively breastfed until that point. But I have several friends who started their babies at 5 months. Just watch your baby and do a very slow introduction if you do decide to go ahead. Just don't add rice cereal to the bottle. That's not recommended by doctors. It causes weight issues later in life to my undertanding ~ at least that's what my pediatrician told me the new studies are showing.

Here are a few articles you might want to check out before making your decision.

Hope these help.

Don't give her rice cereal in her bottle. It's too early for anything other than formula or breast milk (hopefully you're breastfeeding). People used to think that adding rice cereal to bottles before 6 months was okay but now studies link doing so to obesity later in life. It's not a good idea. Do your research.
