That's funny that you mention that because I was thinking of asking a Steve Martin question earlier. But, I do think that Steve Martin would lighten up that jam considerably.
If you've ever hear Casimir Pulaski Day by Sufjan Stevens, then you'll know that the banjo can be used in a sad song. Also, my great uncle is a great banjo player and he could easily bring a tear to your eye with one of his classic Appalachian style songs. I wish that I could give you an example of both.
